The Security Service of Ukraine detained a seller of radioactive materials in Lviv

The man bought 17 smoke detectors with isotopes of plutonium and americium and wanted to resell them for 40 thousand hryvnias.

The illicit trafficking of radioactive materials is not a fake, the Chornobyl Research and Development Institute responded to the detention of another trader of radioactive materials. What can be earned on such equipment is an imprisonment and health problems. Such facts testify to the large number of IRS outside the state regulation and the need to conduct full-scale information projects on radiation safety in the country, as is currently happening in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

"KROK do Bezpeky" (STEP to Safety) project is aimed at debunking the myth of the possibility of enrichment due to radioactive waste. We tell citizens about the rules of conduct in case of detection of IRS, talk about the harm to health from unauthorized handling of sources, advise citizens with the help of the hotline 0 800 21 41 61, we explain where to turn for help, and most importantly - we inform people that there is no criminal liability in case of voluntary notification of the presence or location of IRS. But any attempt at illegal conduct or sale – it is a criminal case. And here the choice is simple. Either surrender the IRS and live in peace, or have problems with the law” - said Olena Salnyk, the manager of the project "KROK do Bezpeky".
